Hi, everyone! A few days ago, I wrote a post about the 5 baby products every new mom needs to buy but I left out baby monitors. Some readers are surprised and asked me about them, so I’d like to talk about this today – do you really need to buy a baby monitor?
Many people would consider baby monitors to be must-have items and would get one the moment they discovered they’re pregnant. However, you may be surprised to discover that some parents actually never used them. I didn’t too. 😊
We’ve tried for about seven years before we finally have our twins, so we want to have them around us all the time. As such, our babies slept together in their crib right next to our bed and sometimes even in our bed, so we didn’t have any need for a baby monitor.
As baby monitors can be expensive, you really have to analyze your personal situation to decide if you need to get one. You don’t need another white elephant laying around the house!
So what are some things you need to think about first?
1. Where is your baby sleeping?
Parents who buy a baby monitor usually have their babies sleeping in another room. If you plan on having your infant sleeping next to your bed till he or she is a toddler, then you probably don’t need to buy one.
Your baby will be next to you most of the time, so you’ll not need a monitor to watch over your baby. Even though there may be moments when you may be in another room, there’ll not likely be for a very long period of time.
2. How big is your house?
If you’re living in a small apartment or house, your baby’s cry should be loud enough for you to hear wherever you may be, so a monitor will not be necessary. However, if you have a huge mansion, then you may want to consider how frequently you may actually need it.
3. Will it cause too much distractions for you?
Let’s face it, when you have a little one in your house, you’ll be very busy so whenever your baby is sleeping, it’ll be the best time for you to either rest or do some household chores. However, if you have the baby monitor turned on, chances are you’ll be listening to it or watching it all the time, wouldn’t it be a source of distraction for you?
You’ll end up not getting any rest or any housework done! Besides, you’ll most likely run to the baby’s room to check on him/her at the slightest noise you hear, and that’ll disrupt your baby’s ability to fall back asleep on his/her own. You’ll have problem training your baby to sleep later on.
Who needs to get a baby monitor?
As mentioned above, if you have a big house or that your baby will be sleeping in a nursery far from your bedroom, then a baby monitor will come in handy. When the baby wakes up for his/her milk or needs a change of diaper, you’ll be able to hear the slightest sound coming from the baby’s room and get there quickly.
2 types of baby monitors available
Once you’ve decided that you need to buy a monitor, you’ll need to know that there are 2 basic kinds of such monitors available – a standard and a video monitor.
Standard baby monitors – only has the sound available so you won’t be able to see your your baby. These devices allow you to turn it on or off so you can decide if you always want to hear the crying.
Video baby monitors – allow you to hear and also see your baby sleeping. If you’re someone who feels more at ease to be able to actually see your little one sleeping, then getting the video monitor will be a better choice.
I’m sure now you’ll have a better idea whether you really need a baby monitor. Do not waste your money on something that you may not need, especially since with a new baby in the house means your monthly expenses will go up. Consider your needs carefully and only buy the basic items.
